Planar Conquest app good for
This is deepest 4X Strategy game available on IOS. I love this game.
Planar Conquest is an amazing game, a must own for fans of deep, engaging and complex strategy games, to those who know about pc strategy games, its like Heroes of Might and Magic decided to change its out of combat moments for Civilization instead. Combats are more thoughtful since your "hero" is omnipresent and can cast spells in any battles, same goes for opponents. The civ part is fantasy based instead of "history" based. Im now in love with this game, there are some little bugs and quirks but the devs are hard working into squashing problems fast, and so far they have been VERY efficient at it. Very recommended game.
Key points: 1. The closest we are likely to get to Master of Magic for iPad.
2. A significant improvement over the initial PC version - "Worlds of Magic"
3. For those who like fantasy 4X its a good, but pricey, buy.
4. Wizard AI now varies a lot. Some very tough on offense. Others try to make treaties with human or other wizard AI players.
5. Unlike some recent games Wizard AIs often fight each other.
6. A very deep game with many paths to try.
7. Some minor bugs left but overall very stable - I am playing on an iPad air 2 and iPhone 6 - I have no data on how it plays on earlier devices.
Planar Conquest is a turn-based 4X that puts you in the role of a Sorcerer, who is in command of a city on one of the planets (planes) in the galaxy. Explore, expand by building tech, new buildings, increasing your population and armies, starting new cities, hiring heroes, and researching spells and magic. Conquer various resources and wonders on your home world, crush or befriend other Sorcerers. Become strong enough to force all other Sorcerers to be under your command, or just wipe everyone out.
1. The game options are what make this 4X so rich and special. Each game is procedurally generated, up to 7 planets (planes) can be included, several options can be independently set for each planet. You also choose your Sorcerers characteristics, what schools of magic he/she subscribes to, and starting spells. Next, choose the ‘race’ of people who are following you at the start of the game, such as Orcs, Elves, Humans, or one of the other 5 races. Adjustable game speed, resource availability, difficulty, etc… Basically the game is so deep, that anyone interested in this genre will never play the same game twice. Ever.
2. Plays great on iPad and iPhone, although games cannot continued on your other device. Multi-player is not currently available, but async multi-player is in their plans. The game maps and battle grounds are 3D, zoom and rotate are used appropriately, everything seems optimized for a touch interface.
3. Yes, the pricing is high (vs. other iDevice games), but definitely worth it given it’s quality and depth. The initial price gives you 3 planes, 4 races. The $19.99 COMPLETE PACK unlocks the rest. No IAP paywalls or other micro-transaction non-sense.
4. An active player community (with developer interactions daily) already has game strategy guides, walkthroughs for race/Sorcerer combinations, and a mechanism for submitting improvement requests and bugs. A 150+ page manual is also integrated into the app, and can be downloaded to your iBooks or printed. Come visit the forums on toucharcade to get answers, help, or just learn more about how to play.
5. A game this complex certainly has a few bugs, but non are deal breakers for me; with an active player community working with the developer, 5-6 versions with balance improvements and bug fixes have already been released since launch (check the version history). The game is quite mature for it’s age. Developers are VERY responsive to bug submittals/improvement ideas through their forum.
SUMMARY: Great, deep gameplay to satisfy anyone with a love for 4X games, unlimited game choices, procedural generation, epic battles, world building, transporting to multiple planes, and did I mention firing fireballs or lightning strikes? How about conjuring up an giant dragon to lay waste to your enemies army? Well, I’m going to fire up the game again and do just that. Buy this game, it really is that good.
This is a full-fledged PC game on mobile, so dont scoff at the price. Unfortunately the learning curve is steep, and though it has a very basic tutorial and help windows for every screen, it could benefit greatly from a much longer tutorial so that we can learn the systems in practice. Nowhere does it tell you what gear is for or how to use it, for example. Only how to make it.
I am sure this game is outstanding, but I am just not drawn in enough to learn by trial and error.
Great game, wish some of the random locations were more accessible early game. Feels like hunkering down in just a handful of early cities is best and researching hero/champion summoning
Some bad moments
Theres a bug in the tutorial-- after it asks you to click on the druids special ability nothing happens. Then it asks you to select from a menu that is not there. Please fix, this looks like it could be a great game.
Unplayable, tutorial bugs out midway through (see other review). tried playing a single player game based on previous Master of Magic experience and couldnt event get the game to start once I selected all the parameters of the campaign...crashes to home screen every time. Wait until next update, save your money!
I bought the $20 doc pack too, no more money for this company!
Everything about this title makes me want to fall into it. Like bad. But just as bad, is the fact that during the tutorial when Druids have to cast acid arrow, you have no way of getting further. With a game of this scale (and a series Ive never played, especially a fantasy 4x) I really need the tutorial to understand how to play. I tried playing a normal game and really didnt know which direction to even take. I want badly to give this game 5stars, and Im probably going to, but be aware.
Early Impressions -
This is a game aimed for people who are fans of games like Master of Magic, Worlds of Magic, etc. Slow, turn-based, 4x type game in a fantasy setting.
Pros: Beautiful graphics. Excellent depth, from units to magic to cities; but it doesnt feel overwhelming. Outstanding onscreen help. Awesome interface/screen setup, exemplary even. Game designers super responsive (have reported that tutorial bug fix submitted to Apple; you can google outside forums where they post support.)
Cons: Bugs (see other comments on the Tutorial bug).
I have zero regrets thus far about spending the money. This is without question a premium title, and clearly a _great_ deal of work has gone into it. (I have played PC games that cost many times this that werent as solid.)
Will update again upon further play.
Amazing quality for a 4X game that I can keep in my pocket. Tutorial bug fix has been sent to Apple already and should be downloadable soon. You can easily put 30 hours into just the base game. That being said, I hope we will see the release of additional content for this already incredibly deep game.
The game is a good game. Being a fan of master of magic I backed them for the PC version off Kickstarter. At this time, this version out ranks the Current PC version by far. I am waiting for that one too though. The game is strategy based and cannot be rushed through. Played through it once and liked it. The in app purchases are ok but $35 for an iOS game is a little steep. Given the depth of the game, it may be worth it. I wish there was a multiplayer capability. A hotseat version or pass n play option would make it even better.
